Finding the Right Word

Posted in Practice Writing tagged , at 5:19 am by Rebecca Hein

Many problems in writing disappear when we stop struggling for the right word. As in music, once you’ve established momentum and free vibration, they carry you along, and everything is easier.

Writing gets sticky when you don’t spend enough time in undirected flow. This is why practice writing is so important: it’s uncensored and uninhibited. Momentum, separated from the problem of quality, teaches us that the right words eventually emerge of their own accord, and when we achieve this, we know we’ve jumped up a level in our work.
